Recipients of the Ben-Gurion Award for 2023-24 and 2024-25

“To be a beacon of science and knowledge for the Negev, Israel, and the nations of the world”—David Ben-Gurion’s founding vision underpins the mission of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, which annually presents the Ben-Gurion Award to inspiring individuals and organizations of exceptional merit. This year, the award honors ten recipients who push the boundaries of involvement, generosity, and human knowledge.

Every year, on the National Memorial Day for David Ben-Gurion, the university that bears his name bestows this prestigious award on men and women who embody the legacy of Israel’s first prime minister. These trailblazers have made significant, unique, or groundbreaking contributions, demonstrated visionary leadership, and set new standards in their fields.

“This award is given to those who carry forward David Ben-Gurion’s path, vision, and spirit. This year, more than ever, we all needed the solace represented in their achievements,” said Ben-Gurion University President Prof. Daniel Chamovitz. “Since October 7, 2023, our university community has lost so many remarkable people. It is our responsibility to continue illuminating their legacy. The recipients’ societal involvement and contributions to science, the economy, and cultural enrichment are integral to the recovery and resilience process, standing as a testament to hope in the face of adversity.”

After being postponed last year in the wake of the October 7 attacks, the following individuals and organizations are the recipients of the Ben-Gurion Award for 2023-4 and 2024-5:

Osnat Peri, Chair of Kibbutz Nir Oz
A survivor of the October 7 massacre, Osnat was saved by the heroism of her late husband, Chaim Peri. Despite profound personal, communal, and national grief, she has dedicated herself tirelessly to the restoration and growth of her community. As chair of Kibbutz Nir Oz, she works day and night to rebuild its shattered homes and mend its broken spirit with unwavering devotion and belief in people’s resilience and the promise of renewal. Her exceptional courage and boundless optimism inspire not only her community but the entire Negev. For her extraordinary perseverance and leadership, Osnat embodies the spirit of revival, offering hope to Nir Oz, the Negev, and beyond.

Friends of Noa Argamani
Amit Farfarah, Roni Cohen-Waz, Yair Kahan, Bar Rahav, Ofir Tamir, Tamara Gokovsky, Shlomit Or, Marciano Goldstein, Yan Gorzelczan, Stav Duaib, Noa Stern, and Amir Muadi
In recognition of their unwavering efforts to secure Noa Argamani’s release from Hamas captivity. For 246 harrowing days, these students from Ben-Gurion University devoted their energy, creativity, and dedication to saving their fellow student, Noa, racing against time with unrelenting commitment. Their advocacy ranged from engaging politicians and ambassadors to mobilizing global media, raising resources, and organizing public campaigns. They provided solace to Noa’s family, dispersed the fog of ignorance worldwide, and maintained hope for her heroic rescue and safe return. Their relentless work also symbolizes the ongoing efforts to ensure the release of all captives.

Orna Banai, Actress and Comedian
Acknowledged as one of Israel’s foremost actors and comedians, Orna Banai has captivated audiences with her iconic roles that poignantly reflect the complexities of Israeli society. A polymath and devoted public servant, Gideon Shani has dedicated over four decades to Israel’s defense and community enrichment. A prolific artist and former chair of the Beer-Sheva and Negev Painters and Sculptors Association, his works have been widely exhibited. Shani’s philanthropic spirit has touched countless lives through his leadership roles in organizations such as the Soroka Medical Center Friends Association and the Retired IDF Officers Association. As a staunch supporter of Ben-Gurion University, Gideon exemplifies the transformative power of art and education in advancing the Negev.

The Pre-Military Preparatory Academy "Asher Ruach Bo"
In recognition of their vital work supporting youth from Israel’s social and economic periphery and reducing social disparities. This honor is for providing a home and transformative guidance to young individuals facing hardships, steering them toward meaningful military service and productive civilian lives. With a commitment to physical and mental preparation, instilling values, discipline, and self-belief, over 90% of graduates serve in the military. The academy is a leading framework for at-risk youth from Israel and the Jewish Diaspora, offering a significant opportunity for change and integration into Israeli society, driven by the belief that no one should be left behind.
