Microbiology, infectious diseases, and bacteriology

The research in the lab centers on bacterial pathogenesis with a focus on type
III secretion systems (T3SS), which are multi-protein complexes that play a key
role in bacterial virulence. T3SSs are found in many gram-negative bacterial
pathogens that cause plant, animal, and human diseases, and they are dedicated
to the secretion and injection of bacterial virulence factors, termed effectors,
into the cytoplasm of the host cells. We believe that a better understanding
of this protein complex will allow us to design novel therapeutic drugs that
will specifically target bacterial pathogens and spare commensal bacteria. In
addition, we aim to utilize the T3SS to inject desired proteins into mammalian
cells for various clinical applications.

Laboratory location: Faculty of Health Sciences, M6 Building, Room 126.
