Epigenetic regulation of epithelial cell-fate commitment
The research in the lab is focused on the epigenetic mechanisms controlling
epithelial cell-fate commitment during skin development, skin diseases,
and cancer. In our new ISF project, we combine cutting-edge epigenetics
and functional genomics methodologies, utilizing embryonic stem cells
and transgenic mice as model systems to elucidate the Polycomb-p63
transcriptional network in epidermal development, as this tissue is essential
for our survival. Fundamentally, knowledge gained through this study will
provide new insights into how generic epigenetic machinery cooperates with
a tissue-specific master regulator to dictate tissue-specific gene expression
and developmental programs. Applicably, the gained knowledge will pave
the way toward the manufacturing of improved skin tissue to treat previously
untreatable chronic skin conditions and debilitate genetic skin disorders.
