About the Faculty

section-bottom

The Faculty of Computer and Information Science is a new faculty established by Ben-Gurion University in the summer of 2025. The faculty is composed of two former departments: Computer Science (CS) and Software and Information Systems Engineering (SISE). The two departments merged into the new faculty to further promote the excellence of research in CIS-related areas. The faculty has a unique and novel structure and is divided along two segments: research and teaching.

Our research segment includes five research institutes:

  • Institute for the Theory of Computing
  • Institute for Interdisciplinary Computational Science
  • Institute for the Foundations of AI
  • Institute for Applied AI Research
  • Institute for Software, Systems and Security (S³)

Each researcher chooses to be affiliated with an institute that best matches his/her scientific theme but can change that choice dynamically.

In the teaching segment, we offer four different undergraduate degrees: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems Engineering and Data Science, as well as Master's and PhD programs.

Nice to meet you!

Shaping the Future of Computer and Information Science

The Faculty unites forces that have previously led in diverse fields – information systems engineering, computer science, cyber, and robotics – and creates a synergistic environment where research and practical breakthroughs are born. First-rate researchers work here, in multidisciplinary teamwork that breaks boundaries: from understanding the fundamental principles of computation, through the development of distributed algorithms and artificial intelligence systems, to applications in medicine, industry and security

Teaching and Research with Wide Influence

The Faculty offers four undergraduate and graduate degree programs in a variety of contemporary and interdisciplinary fields that combine computer science, engineering, and information. Alongside teaching, five dedicated research institutes are being established to provide a foundation for research excellence in vital areas – from computational infrastructure to the challenges of the age of artificial intelligence and digital security

A Place for Growth - Academically and Personally

The Faculty is a focal point for leading researchers from Israel and abroad, thanks to the combination of academic excellence, a creative work environment, and strategic connections with academia, the military, and industry. The faculty leads a new approach to the field: as a force for change, as a connecting link between the individual and the system, and as a basis for extraordinary work

The Faculty's Perspective on Artificial Intelligence

This is not just a technological revolution, but an ongoing process of development, in which smart people build sophisticated machines. When one looks closely, one discovers that behind every code or algorithm, there stand familiar human patterns.

The new Faculty is the place where the big questions of the age of artificial intelligence can be addressed – in one place, from a broad, responsible and constructive perspective.

Faculty Vision

  • Promote academic excellence in research and teaching in computer science and information processing, while advancing basic, theoretical, applied and interdisciplinary science
  • Educate students, graduates and faculty members in creativity, innovation and technological entrepreneurship in order to contribute to the prosperity and well-being of the Negev community, the State of Israel and the world
  • Prepare our graduates to be at the forefront of the Israeli and global high-tech industry while ensuring the cultivation of a culture of professional ethics, empathy, fairness, transparency and mutual respect within the faculty community and beyond
