Sustainability in Hospitals

We study how clinical practices and staff awareness can reduce hospitals’ environmental footprint, initially focusing on anaesthesia.

Anaesthetic Gases and Hospital Carbon Emissions

Levy et al. (2026) analysed 5,905 procedures at Soroka University Medical Center to assess carbon emissions from anaesthetic gases. Nitrous oxide accounted for more than half of these emissions, and physicians’ routine practice patterns were the main factor influencing its use, even after accounting for patient and procedural characteristics. The findings highlight opportunities to reduce emissions through changes in anaesthetic choices and fresh gas flow.

Sustainability Awareness and Anaesthesia Practice

Avidan et al. (2026) surveyed Israeli anaesthetists to examine sustainability knowledge, attitudes, and clinical practices. Although respondents expressed strong environmental concerns, these were only weakly reflected in everyday practice. The findings highlight the need for education, institutional support, and clear policies to support sustainable anaesthesia.
