About Quantum Science at BGU

Quantum Science in a few words

Quantum theory was developed only about a century ago, yet it has fundamentally transformed our understanding of nature. Although many aspects of the quantum world remain unresolved, quantum mechanics is now recognized as the underlying framework governing physical phenomena across an enormous range of scales — from atoms and living systems to stars, galaxies, and black holes.

Quantum information science investigates how information is represented, processed, transmitted, and protected in systems governed by the laws of quantum mechanics. Its applications span both microscopic and cosmological scales and have led to the emergence of rapidly developing research areas such as quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum cryptography, quantum sensing, and quantum information processing.

An interdisciplinary science

Quantum information science is inherently interdisciplinary. It brings together researchers from computer science, physics, mathematics, chemistry, nanotechnology, and electrical, optical, materials, and mechanical engineering. This broad collaboration is essential for translating fundamental quantum principles into practical technologies.

The Center for Quantum Information Science & Technology at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev brings together scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs working at the forefront of quantum research and development.

The Center promotes interdisciplinary research, education, collaboration, and innovation in areas including quantum computing, communication, cryptography, sensing, and information processing.
