Effects of inflammation on chronic kidney disease

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in Western society in both adults
and children. A decrease in kidney function in CKD is associated with the
accumulation of "uremic toxins", leading to several complications, including
anemia, inflammation, and bone disease. In CKD, inflammation was shown
to increase and mediate several key complications. The current treatment
of anemia in CKD includes erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) and/
or oral or intravenous iron supplementation. 10%-20% of CKD patients are
resistant to ESA, which has been clinically associated with the inflammatory
state, and no treatments targeting inflammation have been approved in
patients with CKD to date. Through advancement in the understanding of
key mediators in the unique inflammatory response to kidney disease, our
studies will lead to finding an intervention that will reduce the inflammatory
response and lead to improved kidney function and anemia indices.
