We study the neural circuits underlying pathological pain

Bringing fundamental research with the development of new experimental and computational methods to study neural circuits and behavior across scales.

How does our nervous system encode sensation, perception and behavior during pain?

Our lab studies the neural circuits that shape pain with a particular focus on how they change in pathological states. We are interested in how sensory information is represented across the nervous system, how internal and behavioral states influence pain experience, and how persistent changes can transform pain from a protective sensation into a chronic condition.

We aim to uncover the mechanisms that drive pathological pain and identify new avenues for treatment.

Our approach

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way we explore and understand the world, opening exciting new possibilities for neuroscience. We combine the transformative potential of AI with experimental and computational neuroscience to uncover how neural circuits generate sensation, perception, and behavior. Our research integrates in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology, calcium imaging, behavioral assays, and genetic manipulations with computational modeling. We also develop AI-powered tools to reveal patterns in complex neural and behavioral data, enabling us to ask new questions and gain deeper insights into nervous system function.
