The Capsule Experiment

The Capsule Experiment is part of the Avidan Lab's ongoing gut-brain interoception research, examining how gastric activity interacts with brain function and perception. Participants take part in one recording session followed by two brief online follow-ups.

What the Session Involves

Participants sit in an armchair while several physiological signals are recorded, including heart rate, skin conductance, brain activity (EEG), gastric activity (EGG), and a digital stethoscope. The session opens with a 15-minute baseline recording, during which participants are asked to stay still. Participants then swallow a capsule and are asked to press a button whenever they notice it vibrate. The full session takes about two hours.

General Guidelines

Avoid eating for 3 hours before the session and avoid drinking for 30 minutes before.

Wear comfortable clothing, including pants that can be rolled up slightly, since electrodes are placed on the lower abdomen. Bring a jacket or an extra warm layer, as the recording room can be cool.

The EEG portion involves applying a small amount of gel to the scalp to secure the electrodes. A towel and shampoo are available afterward for anyone who wants to rinse it out.

Participants complete a main session, followed by two follow-up questionnaires at 6 weeks and 6 months.

The experiment takes place at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Building 98, Room 305.
