הספר כוונת התורה וכוונת הקורא בה סוקר את דרכי ההתמודדות במסורת הפרשנות היהודית לדורותיה עם הקשיים הספרותיים והענייניים המתגלים בתורה על רקע האמונה במקורה האלוהי ובקדושתה... ספר זה הוא ניסיון ראשון מסוגו לבחון את תולדות העיסוק הפרשני בתורה ממבט-על. במרכזו עיון בעשרות קטעי מפתח מחיבורים מסוף תקופת הבית השני, מקורות תלמודיים ומדרשיים, היגדים של חכמי ימי הביניים ופרקי הגות ומחקר של חכמים בני תקופת ההשכלה והזמן החדש. ממעוף הציפור, הפרטים המבחינים את הטקסטים אלו מאלו מיטשטשים ומאפשרים לעמוד ביתר קלות על קווי האחידות, אך גם על צמתים מרכזיים של שינוי והתפתחות המייחדים כל תקופה ותקופה. זהו ספר יסוד לכל המתעניין בפניה המשתנים של פרשנות המקרא
