Eran Viezel was born in 1972 in Kibbutz Netiv HaLamed Heh. He holds a PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is a full professor in the Bible Studies Division, Department of Jewish Thought at Ben-Gurion University.

Viezel researches biblical interpretation throughout its history, with an emphasis on rabbinic exegesis—from the exegesis of the Sages (Chazal) through medieval biblical commentary to biblical scholarship in the period of the Enlightenment (Haskalah) and in modern times. His research demonstrates a broad historical and cultural perspective, and he often addresses methodological issues and the history of research. Among his research interests are traditional views on the formation of the Bible.

During his academic career, Viezel has been invited to teach courses at academic institutions in the U.S.A., Europe, and China.

In addition to his research work, Viezel is a poet and writer.
