Resonance tongues and patterns in periodically forced reaction-diffusion systems
The different types of resonant and near-resonant patterns which form in a light-sensitive Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction in response to a spatially homogeneous time-periodic perturbation with light, were studied. An experimental phase diagram was constructed in the forcing frequency and amplitude parameter plane of the resonant and nearly resonant m:n responses. Resonant pattern solutions consisted of standing waves connecting regions of different phases. A forced reaction-diffusion model, modified FitzHugh-Nagumo equations was introduced. The numerical simulations of the model show that the resonant and near-resonant patterns are similar to the BZ chemical system.
