Nonlinear Physics of Ecosystems
We study nonlinear, spatially extended complex systems with a focus on dryland, savanna, and tundra ecosystems. Our goal is to understand ecosystem response to climate change and how informed human intervention can prevent ecosystem degradation. We develop spatially explicit mathematical models of ecosystem dynamics at multiple organizational and trophic levels, which we study numerically and analytically using state-of-the-art methods in pattern formation theory. We further collaborate with ecology groups to test model predictions empirically.
