​The book offers a sta​te-of-the-art treatise on the newly emerging research field at the interface b​etween pattern formation – a discipline that centers on spatial self-organization, and spatial eco​logy. Following a detailed exposition of pattern formation theo​ry, applications to spatial ecology are described, focusing on vegetation pattern formation in dryland​s. The significance of egetation patterning to outstanding environmental problems, such as desertification and biodiversity change in varying environments, is further explained.​
