Patents:

1.    D. J. Harter, M. L. Shand, Y. B. Band and H. Samelson, Optical Limiter, U.S. Patent No.  4,723,248.  Issued February 2, 1988.

An optical device that stabilizes the power in a cw laser beam comprises a material whose absorption coefficient increases wth increasing incident intensity. The same device acts as an energy limiter and pulse shortener for a pulsed laser. In either case, the device can be located either within the laser cavity or outside it. In another embodiment, the device is placed into the cavity of a passively mode-locked laser to permit mode-locking with laser materials that have high gain-saturation energy. Materials suitable for use in the device include Cr-doped crystalline solids and organic solutions, such as laser dyes, saturable absorber dyes, etc.

2.    Y. B. Band, J. S. Krasinski, and D. H. Heller, Interlocked Ring Intracavity Raman Laser and Method of Generating Raman Shifted Laser Output, U.S. Patent No. 4,829,528.  Issued May 9, 1989.

Device for providing a train of light pulses at Raman shifted frequency comprises a first ring laser (for fundamental frequency) and a second ring laser (for Raman shifted frequency). Both ring laser intersect in a Raman laser medium which is common to the cavity of both ring lasers. The Raman cavity has output means partially transmissive at Raman frequency. Length of first and second ring laser cavities differs by DL. Injection of a fundamental pump pulse and a small Raman seed pulse into their respective cavities results in output of a train of Stokes pulses.

3.    J. S. Krasinski, Paul A. Papanestor, Yehuda B. Band, Donald F. Heller, Robert C. Morris, Timothy C. K. Chin,  Broadband tuning and laser line narrowing utilizing birefringent laser hosts, U.S. Patent No. 5,142,548, Issued  August 25, 1992.

Rotational displacement of the birefringent lasing medium in a lasing cavity containing a polarizing element varies the spectral width of the generated laser light. The combination in a lasing cavity of a birefringent lasing medium, a polarizing element, a tuning element and a birefringent compensator permits output of narrow bandwidth spectrally tuned laser light continuously over the total gain bandwidth of the lasing medium by rotating the lasing medium, tuning to desired wavelength, and adjusting the birefringent compensator to optimize output of laser light.

4.    J. S. Krasinski, Y. B. Band, and D. H. Heller, Process and Apparatus for Efficient Sum and Difference Frequency Generation, U.S. Patent No. 4897562.  Issued  Jan. 30, 1990.

Output efficiency in optical parametric mixing of at least two source laser beams to produce new frequencies representing the sum or difference of the source beams--where at least one source beam has two or more longitudinal modes--is improved by employing two non-linear mixing media (preferably mixing crystals), recovering the unconverted light of the original frequencies from the first mixing medium, separating it into its spectral components, delaying one of the separated components with respect to the other, and combining the separated components in the second mixing medium for conversion into a further frequency-shifted product beam.
