DARE: Desert Academic Retreat

Summer Program for Professors at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

This unique retreat invites researchers from around the world to immerse themselves in a tranquil, intellectually enriching environment. With dedicated time for advancing your research, collaborative opportunities with BGU’s renowned faculty, and dynamic cultural and academic exchanges, DARE offers the ideal setting to foster innovation and professional growth.

The retreat also includes immersive cultural experiences, such as guided explorations of the region’s rich history and natural beauty, creating a well-rounded and inspiring environment for academic growth.

2026 DARE Application Details:

We welcome applications from academics seeking a dynamic setting to foster creativity and deepen professional connections.

  • Senior academic staff with a tenured position at an accredited higher education institution.
  • All disciplines are welcome.
  • Willingness to stay in Israel for a minimum of 3 weeks and up to 5 weeks (depending on cohort preference).
  • Priority will be given to first-time visitors to Israel, especially to scholars who have initiated contact with BGU researchers they wish to meet and collaborate with.

  • Tuition: Free to participate
  • Funding: $4,000 for the 3 weeks, +$500 per extra week (max $5,000)
  • Expenses: Travel, accommodation, health insurance, and other costs are the participant's responsibility

During the retreat, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of academic, social, and cultural activities, such as guided explorations of the region’s rich history and natural beauty and meetings with BGU academic staff. All activities are provided at no cost.

Accommodation options include U-Tel, Domus in Beer-Sheva, Leonardo Hotel in the Negev, and Sherman's Hotel in Sde Boker, with additional options available closer to the retreat start.
