Natural faults have a complex structure with nonplanar geometry and heterogeneous rock composition and mechanical properties. The effects of those on the rupture process during the earthquake cycle are not clear.

We use numerical simulations, analog laboratory experiments (Laboratory Earthquakes), which combine ultrahigh-speed photography with image analysis, and machine learning to study the earthquake rupture process in complex fault zones. These include the effects of fault bends, roughness, damage zone, and friction behavior.
