World's oldest oceanic crust

Geophysical data showing that the eastern Mediterranean Sea preserves remnants of an ancient ocean, most likely the Earth's oldest. The magnetic anomalies are projected along ship tracks (red shading indicates positive anomalies). Background grid shows gravity data derived from satellites altimetry. The spatial correlation of these data indicate that the crust was formed along mid-ocean ridge in a seafloor spreading process oriented in a northwest-southeast direction.
