Zinc biology
Zinc is essential for the growth, development, and function of most
physiological systems, like the gastrointestinal tract, salivary glands,
integumentary, and brain. Our lab focuses on elucidating the cellular
mechanisms activated by zinc and its regulatory pathways. Our lab
identified a distinct zinc sensing receptor ZnR/GPR39, which activates major
signaling pathways and regulates ion transport, cytoskeleton organization,
proliferation, and cell survival. We determine the physiological roles of
ZnR/GPR39 in salivary gland secretion, amelioration of diarrhea symptoms,
seizure, and attenuation of cancer cell migration.
