Aviva Segev - Administrative Director, Faculty of Health Sciences 1974-1999
Aviva Segev (Zelinger) was born in Haifa and moved with her parents to Tel Aviv at age five, where she grew up. She studied dance and violin and became the first violinist of the Tel Aviv Youth Orchestra. Her brother Ruvein fell in the war of independence (1948). After her marriage to Shlomo Segev, the couple and their two children moved to Beer Sheva in 1962. Shortly after their arrival, Aviva was appointed administrative director of Beer Sheva’s teacher’s seminary (today, the Kaye Academic College of Education) where she played an instrumental role in the institution’s development.
In 1974 Ben-Gurion University's director-general Mr. Israel Ben-Amitai invited Aviva Segev to join those establishing BGU’s new medical school and Faculty of Health Sciences. In June 1974 she joined the staff of the University, and in 1977 was appointed administrative director of the Faculty. In the framework of her position Aviva Segev participated in the establishment of other schools within the Faculty of Health Sciences, including the Medical School for International Health (in collaboration with Columbia University), the School of Nursing, the School of Physiotherapy, the School of Health Systems Management, the School of Medical Laboratory Sciences, and advanced degree programs for masters and doctoral programs in basic medical research and health sciences.
Parallel to academic administration of the Faculty, Aviva was active in the administration of many volunteer initiatives in the community, including integration of the Faculty in these endeavors. This included frameworks to combat substance abuse (the Al-Sam "Restart" program where she was one of the founding members, and the Samim lo od or SELA project); a village for children at risk (HaOgen HaKhilati - Community-based Anchor); and Edy’s House (the Ma'agan Community Support Center for Cancer Patients and their Families) – the last, which she administered on a volunteer basis for eleven years. While Aviva Segev retired from her position as the Faculty’s administrative director in 1999, she continued to play a core role in volunteer work on behalf of the community. In 2005 Aviva Segev was honored as a Key to the Beer Sheva City Notable (Yakir HaIr) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the city and the community.
