Layered hydrogen-bonded nucleotide-functionalized CdS nanoparticles for photoelectrochemical applications

Jian Ping Xu, Yossi Weizmann, Nataly Krikhely, Ronan Baron, Itamar Willner

The preparation of nucleotide-functionalized CdS nanoparticles (NP) and their assembly on Au electrodes was discussed. The base C monolayer was assembled on the Au electrode by the covalent coupling of C to a cysteamine-functionalized Au electrode that resulted in layered H-bonded assembly of C-G hydrogen bonds following the layer-by-layer deposition of the G-functionalized CdS NPs and the A-T hydrogen-bonded layered assembly was constructed by primary modification of the Au electrode with,T followed by the layer-to-layer deposition of A-functionalized CdS NP, and subsequently with T-modified NP. The photocurrents generated by irradiation of layered G-C assemblies in the presence of ethanolamine as an electron donor was analyzed by photochemical system and NP images by TEM. It was found that photocurrent value increases linearly with build up of multilayer assembly. Result shows that H-bonded arrays provides effective bridges for transporting electrons to the electrode.
