The Eocene stratigraphy of Mt. Gilboa and northern Samaria, Israel

Y. Hatzor,C. Benjamini, Y. Mimran, L. P. Grossowicz

Six columnar sections from the Eocene of the Gilboa Mountains of northern Israel are presented, divided into three lithostratigraphic units which were mapped in this region. These sections are correlated by biostratigraphic evidence and by regional events dated elsewhere in Israel. A revised nomenclature for the exposed Eocene sequence at Gilboa is provided. The lower Eocene is missing at the Gilboa region due to a large-scale unconformity at the base of the Eocene sequence, associated with tectonic activity along an adjacent Syrian Arc structure, the Faria anticline. -from Authors
