The influence of porosity on tensile and compressive strength of porous chalks

The dependence of point load strength, compressive strength and tensile strength on porosity of Adulam chalk in Israel was investigated. It was observed that point load strength and uniaxial compressive strength in porous Adulam chalks decreased with increasing porosity. It was also observed that the ratio σc/Id between uniaxial compressive strength and point load strength was not constant, but was dependent on the porosity. The results show that an increase in porosity from 18 to 40% leads to decrease in σc/Id from 18 to 8.
