Our research

Soft matter in external fields

Our group works on the theory of soft-matter systems: liquids, gels, colloids, membranes, polymers, and liquid
crystals. We specialize at modeling phase transitions and propagating
waves, driven by electric or magnetic fields or other forces. We focus
on the meso-scale and look at general, non-chemical aspects.
In recent years, we worked on:

Equilibrium phenomena:

  • Phase transitions in liquid mixtures in spatially nonuniform forces

  • Nucleation around a charged core article
  • Orientational transitions and crystallization in spheroidal colloids near charged surfaces
  • Interfacial phenomena in liquids containing salt

Flow phenomena:

  • Electrolubrication in liquid mixtures flowing near charged surfaces
  • Hall effect and in flowing electrolytes in magnetic fields
  • Interfacial instabilities and pattern formation in complex fluids in electric fields
  • Epidemiological model for virus spread based on reaction-diffusion
    like dynamics
