The characterization of gain dynamics in InAs/InP 1550 nm quantum dash lasers and optical amplifiers is discussed. The spectrally resolved optical modulation and cross gain modulation (XGM) are used for the purpose. Spectrally adjacent gain regions show some degree of coupling since they are fed from a common wetting or barrier layer. It is found that the fast component dominates at small detunings but as the probe wavelength shortens, the relative role of the slow component increases and eventually dominates.
