Instrumental Orchestration with Emerging Digital Technology

Osama Swidan, Florian Schacht, Matthias Ludwig, Virginia J. Flood

This chapter explores instrumental orchestrations with three kinds of digital technology for teaching mathematics: embodied mathematics learning technologies, augmented reality technology, and geolocation mobile technologies. Our basic assumption was that emerging digital technology might shape teacher practices. To shed light on how the use of emerging digital technologies affects educators’ practices, we use the instrumentation orchestration framework to identify and characterize orchestration processes. We present three examples to illustrate specific types of orchestration typical to emerging digital tools and discuss how such tools prompt the evolution of such orchestration. We conclude our chapter by comparing and contrasting the instrumental orchestrations that emerged during the use of emerging technologies.
