ASE noise-reduced optical receiver based on MZI diversity scheme
A novel method that reduces the bit error rate (BER) was proposed in an optically amplified communications system. This was achieved by splitting the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise into two incoherent parts. Results showed that the signal to noise ratio (SNR) can be improved by 3 dB. The system required feedback control so the laser central frequency and the Mach-Zender interferometer (MZI) pathlength will be accurately matched.
