About
Aviad Moreno is the Head of the Israel Studies Program, and a Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Associate Professor) at the Ben-Gurion Institute for the Study of Israel and Zionism at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. His research focuses on Jewish migration from Muslim countries from global and comparative perspectives. More recently, his work has expanded to explore the diverse and evolving forms of Israeli diaspora.
In 2021, Moreno founded the Communities in Motion and Mobilities research hub at the Azrieli Center for Israel Studies (MALI) at Ben-Gurion University, dedicated to exploring these themes. He serves, among other roles, as a member of the content committee of the ANU Museum of the Jewish People, as an external member of the Royal Spanish Academy, and as the lead of the Diversifying the Israeli Diaspora research group at Brandeis University. Previously, he was a member of the development team of the Historical Jewish Press digitization project and has held research fellowships at the University of Michigan, the University of Pennsylvania, Tel Aviv University, the University of Florida, and Brandeis University.
In 2026, Moreno was appointed Courtesy Associate Professor at the Bud Shorstein Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Florida.
Moreno's work has been recognized with numerous fellowships and awards, including the Alon Fellowship awarded by the Israel Council for Higher Education, the Toldano Prize, the Ben-Halpern Prize from the Association for Israel Studies (AIS), the Gad Barzilai Prize from AIS, and the Distinguished Early Career Award from the Association for the Social Scientific Study of Jewry.
His books have received significant recognition, including the National Jewish Book Award in Sephardic Culture, the Latin American Jewish Studies Association (LAJSA) Book Award, the Edith and Eric Siday Grant for Book Publication, and the Mifal HaPais Grant for Hebrew-language books.
