Swiss Friends of Ben-Gurion University Host Annual Gala in Geneva
An evening highlighting academic excellence, student research, and the rebuilding of the Aranne Library
The Swiss Friends of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev hosted their annual gala dinner on 9 December 2025 at the Hotel President Wilson in Geneva, bringing together nearly 380 guests for an evening focused on academic excellence, student research, and the university’s role in Israel’s south.
The event featured Arthur Essebag, French television producer, news anchor, and author of J’ai perdu un Bédouin dans Paris, who spoke about his personal and professional journey following October 7. In his remarks, Essebag reflected on the consequences of publicly expressing support for Israel and the Jewish people, and on the importance of remaining grounded in one’s values during challenging times.
Lionel Halpérin, Chair of the Swiss Friends of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and Jeff Kaye, Vice President for Public Affairs and Resource Development at BGU, addressed the audience and emphasized the central role Ben-Gurion University plays in advancing research, educating future leaders, and contributing to the recovery and long-term development of the Negev. They highlighted the university’s continued commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and social responsibility.
A central feature of the evening was a “Students Fair,” which offered guests an opportunity to engage directly with five Ben-Gurion University students presenting their research. The presentations provided insight into the breadth and quality of work being conducted at the university, spanning diverse fields and illustrating the close connection between research, education, and societal impact.
The gala also served as a platform to raise support for extensive repairs and refurbishment of the Zalmann Aranne Central Library building, which sustained damage during an Iranian missile attack. The library plays a vital role in campus life, supporting students, faculty, and researchers across disciplines, and its renewal is an important component of the university’s recovery efforts.
The evening concluded with informal discussions among guests, students, and university representatives, reinforcing the strong and enduring connection between Ben-Gurion University and its Swiss supporters.
