More than 1,200 supporters of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev gathered in Toronto on November 2, 2025 for the annual BGU Strong Gala, an evening that combined solidarity, reflection, and forward-looking commitment to the University’s future. Hosted by Ben-Gurion University Canada, the event brought together community leaders, friends and supporters united by a shared belief in the University’s mission and resilience.

The evening unfolded against the backdrop of a challenging year for Israel and the Negev region, underscoring the importance of sustained global support for BGU’s students, researchers, and staff. Throughout the program, speakers and guests emphasized the University’s role not only as a center of academic excellence, but also as a source of innovation, leadership, and hope in times of uncertainty.

The program also featured remarks by Emmanuel Acho, New York Times bestselling co-author of Uncomfortable Conversations with a Jew, who spoke about empathy, moral responsibility, and the importance of standing together in difficult moments. Social media creator and global storyteller Nuseir Yassin (Nas Daily) added a forward-looking perspective, encouraging optimism, action, and the belief that individuals and institutions can help shape a better future.

The evening was moderated by Israeli journalist Tamar Ish Shalom, who guided the conversation with insight and sensitivity. Guests also heard an update from BGU President Prof. Daniel Chamovitz, who spoke about the University’s ongoing efforts to recover and rebuild following the Iranian ballistic missile attacks in June, and about the critical role of international partnerships in sustaining BGU’s work.

By the end of the evening, the Toronto community had raised just over $3.3 million in support of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. These funds will help strengthen academic continuity, research, and infrastructure, ensuring that the University can continue to serve as a driver of innovation and opportunity in the Negev.
