Alex Weingrod lived a beautiful life.

Alex combined his deep love and appreciation for the humanities with his curiosity about the human condition, especially as it manifests in the convolutions of everyday politics and quotidian religion in Israel.

Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the holder of three degrees from the University of Chicago, Alex and his ebullient wife Bracha came to Israel to contribute to the development of this country. They traveled the world together, often accompanied by their children and grandchildren, yet Israel and their home in Jerusalem provided both the anchor and lodestone for their professional and personal life.

Alex Weingrod leaves an unparalleled legacy of enlightenment about Israel's paradoxical society beginning with Reluctant Pioneers (1966), followed by scores of articles and collected volumes about ethnicity, ingathering, and diaspora, and his iconoclastic The Saint of Beersheba (1990). Alex continued publishing during the 21st century, ending only last year with his capstone opus, The New Israelis (2024). Throughout his career, first at Brandeis University and then at BGU, Professor Alex Weingrod worked with scores of students and colleagues dispensing his wisdom with kindness and humor. His ethnographic observations and keen analyses and his personal warmth and grace will remain with us, keeping us true to the humanistic path of Anthropology.

פרופ' אנדרה לוי

המחלקה לסוציולוגיה ולאנתרופולוגיה מבכה את פטירתו של פרופ' אלכס ויינגרוד, מן הדמויות המרכזיות בתולדות האנתרופולוגיה החברתית בישראל. ויינגרוד חקר את ההגירה, האתניות, המסורתיות, יחסי יהודים-ערבים והחיים בעיר מחולקת, והטביע חותם מחקרי עמוק בתחום. הוא עמד בראש המחלקה לאנתרופולוגיה באוניברסיטת ברנדייס, ולאחר עלייתו לישראל ב-1974 היה ממובילי תחום האנתרופולוגיה באוניברסיטת בן-גוריון, שם הקים את התכנית לאנתרופולוגיה ופיתח קהילה אקדמית פעילה. עבודותיו, שזכו לתמיכת קרנות יוקרתיות וזיכו אותו בפרסים, חיברו רגישות אתנוגרפית עם ניתוחים פוליטיים חדים. פרופ’ ויינגרוד הותיר אחריו מורשת אקדמית ואנושית מפוארת. יהי זכרו ברוך.
