About

My research is focused on the different aspects of the desert's environments from geophysics to ecology. I use both mathematical tools of nonlinear dynamics and field studies to understand the different phenomena in the deserts like vegetation pattern formation, aeolian geomorphology both on Earth and Mars, ecohydrology, and the impact of geodiversity on the resilience of the ecological systems to prolonged drought. I think that the combination of experiments (in the field and wind tunnel) and numerical simulations is the best way to study these complex systems and pattern formation. I have a very good collaboration with scientists from other disciplines such as ecologists, geomorphologists, soil scientists and microbiologists. These collaborations lead to high-impact publications in PNAS, Nature Physics and Nature Communications. I think that these collaborations are necessary for high-level interdisciplinary studies and for understanding the desert environment that fascinates me. Thus, my research is an interplay between modeling and fieldwork. In some cases, the model is developed for understanding a new observation, but in other cases the opposite is true and model prediction drives the research in the field.
