About

Dr. Assaf Shmerling is a Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, where he previously earned his B.Sc. summa cum laude and Ph.D. in Structural Engineering. His primary research focuses on developing methodologies for seismic performance-based design and the retrofitting of structures using passive and semi-active energy dissipation technologies, often employing optimal control theory to solve complex civil engineering problems. Dr. Shmerling is currently advancing algorithms for semi-active pendulum systems to mitigate both earthquake and wind loads, while also investigating the seismic vulnerability of existing structures through the development of capacity and fragility curves. He leads the university's Earthquake Engineering laboratory, utilizing a small-scale shaking table for experimental research, and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses including Earthquake Engineering and Dynamics of Structures.
