About
The mitochondrion, the major provider of cellular energy, is a central player in metabolism, signaling and in cell death. This is the only component within the cytoplasm of animal cells that has its own genetic material, a strictly maternally inherited genome (the mtDNA). During evolution, most genes from the original mitochondrial genome were either lost or transferred to the host genome, thus creating a bi-genomic system.The principles underlying the bigenomic interactions (mito-nuclear) and co-regulation are investigated at the Mishmar lab using a combination of molecular biology, cell culture, genomics and computational biology techniques.
