About

Gilad Antler is an Associate Professor of marine and environmental geochemistry whose work sits at the boundary between chemistry, biology, and Earth system science. His research asks a simple but demanding question: how do sediments and living systems together regulate the fate of carbon and nutrients in aquatic environments? By combining field observations, controlled experiments, and conceptual models, he studies seagrass meadows, coastal sediments, and low-energy environments as active biogeochemical reactors rather than passive archives. His work emphasizes processes that are subtle yet decisive, cryptic element cycles, redox feedbacks, and thresholds where ecosystems shift from carbon sinks to sources. Alongside research, he is deeply engaged in teaching and mentoring, viewing education as a shared inquiry rather than the transfer of facts. He approaches science as both a quantitative discipline and a form of natural philosophy, grounded in measurements, but motivated by curiosity about how complex systems hold together, and how they fail.
