פרופסור ויטלי גיטיס הוא פרופסור מן המניין במחלקה להנדסת מכונות בפקולטה למדעי ההנדסה באוניברסיטת בן-גוריון בנגב, ומכהן כראש התכנית להנדסת אנרגיה. בשנת 2025 מונה לפרופסור המופקד על הקתדרה לתעשייה עולמית מבוססת מחשוב ופיתוח מדעי ע?ש סר ליאון בגריט.מחקריו של פרופסור גיטיס מתמקדים בתהליכי הפרדה מתקדמים, הנדסת מים ואנרגיה, ממברנות קרמיות ופולימריות, זאוליטים וחומרים נקבוביים, תוך שילוב בין ניסויים, מודלים פיזיקו-כימיים ויישומים הנדסיים בקנה מידה תעשייתי. מחקריו עוסקים בין היתר בטיפול במים ושפכים, התפלה, קשרי מים/אנרגיה, בועיות מיקרו-וננו, פוטוקטליזה, והדפסה תלת-ממדית של ממברנות קרמיות.
פרופסור גיטיס פרסם למעלה מ-80 מאמרים בכתבי עת בינלאומיים מובילים, מחבר ועורך של ספרים מקצועיים בהוצאות בינלאומיות, ובעל מדד ציטוט גבוה בתחומו. הוא משמש כעורך-ראשי-שותף של סדרת הספרים Energy & Climate בהוצאת World Scientific, וכחבר מערכות עריכה של מספר כתבי עת מדעיים.
לאורך השנים מילא תפקידי מחקר והוראה במוסדות אקדמיים מובילים בישראל ובעולם, בהם האוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים, אוניברסיטת אמסטרדם, אוניברסיטת אדלייד, אוניברסיטת סינסינטי (בשיתוף סוכנות ה-EPA האמריקאית), וכן כפרופסור אורח מצטיין באוניברסיטת הכרייה של סין (CUMT). בנוסף, הוא פעיל במסגרות בינלאומיות של ה-IWA ומשמש כחוקר מוערך, מעריך הצעות מחקר ובוחן עבודות דוקטורט עבור אוניברסיטאות וגופים בינלאומיים.
פרופסור גיטיס מנחה תלמידי מחקר לתארים מתקדמים, מוביל שיתופי פעולה אקדמיים-תעשייתיים בארץ ובעולם, ומשלב בין מחקר בסיסי ליישומים הנדסיים בני-קיימא בתחומי מים, אנרגיה וסביבה.
