Grant Awards:

DFG - Middle East Collaboration Program

In 2021 Professors Itzik Meltzer and Amir Shapiro were awarded funds for an ABC-Robotics Research and Development Project
"Locomotor Stability and Plasticity in the Elderly: Learning to Resist Falls Through Different Training Methods"
They designed and developed a novel mechatronic bicycling device, the Perturbation Stationary Bicycles Robotic System (PerStBiRo),
which simulates outdoor cycling while providing balance challenges during stationary indoor bicycling.
The PerStBiRo introduces unexpected perturbations to proactively and reactively challenge balance control, aiming to enhance stability. The system includes a motion capture unit and a processing unit capable of analyzing subjects’ responses to perturbations, providing real-time feedback, and adjusting training sessions accordingly. By triggering balance “reflexes,” this system has the potential to improve balance responses in older adults.
As a result of the above project, Professors Melzer and Shapiro filed a patent for the Balance Trainer Simulator System
and were awarded a research grant from the prestigious DFG - Middle East Collaboration Program.
