Minimizing the rebound velocity of a weight striking a cantilever beam

Eytan Kochavi, Shimon Gruntman, I. Shafir, Gal Debotton

We examine a cantilever beam subjected to impact by a falling weight. The goal is to analyze the interaction between a moving weight and the elastic beam from the viewpoint of the system's ability to absorb the kinetic energy of the impactor. It is found that at certain distinct impact locations the ratio between the rebound and the impact velocities can be as low as one third. This suggests that at these anomalous locations most of the kinetic energy of the weight is transfered to the beam. A simple model is proposed, explaining these anomalies.
