Joan Shelley Rubin

Joan Shelley Rubin is Professor of History at the University of Rochester, where she has taught since 1995. She is the author, most recently, of Songs of Ourselves: The Uses of Poetry in America (2007), for which she held a Guggenheim Fellowship. She has also written The Making of Middlebrow Culture (1992) and Constance Rourke and America Culture (1980), as well as numerous articles in the field of American cultural history, including “What is the History of the History of Books?” (Journal of American History, September 2003). She is co-editor of A History of the Book in America, volume V: The Enduring Book and an associate editor of The Oxford Companion to the Book.
