James L. Machor

James L. Machor is Professor of English at Kansas State University and a former NEH and senior Fulbright Fellow. His books include Readers in History: Nineteenth-Century American Literature and the Contexts of Response (1993), Pastoral Cities: Urban Ideals and the Symbolic Landscape of America (1987), and (with Phil Goldstein) Reception Study: From Literary Theory to Cultural Studies (2001) and New Directions in American Reception Study (2008). He currently is completing a book on informed response, middle-class reading, and the reception of American fiction before the Civil War.
