Conditional regard in close relationships.

Yaniv Kanat-Maymon, Guy Roth,Avi Assor, Abira Reizer
In this chapter, the authors build on self-determination theory and analyze ways in which social contexts can interfere with desirable autonomy. They focus especially on the use of conditional positive and negative regard in the socialization of children and the treatment of adult relationship partners, which can inhibit autonomy and erode well-being. The authors review recent studies showing that both forms of conditional regard—positive as well as negative—have harmful effects on autonomous motivation, academic achievement, psychological well-being, and relationship quality.
