Actually this counter counts only 5% of the actual accesses to this page, because the “proxy” keeps a copy of this page in its “cache”
and allows accessing it without going through the counter.

This is a list which I compiled in 1995 for my friends who said they didn't know where to go and where is the information, which is hiding in the overwhelming space of WWW. I've been using it to help my students in their first encounter with “The Internet”, i.e. “WWW”. In 2005 I added to it sites which are relevant for "Senior Citizens", for the members of the BGU-RET e-mail discussion group of "Computers & Retirees", since I've become one of them (retirees of course, not computers). I've put here many useful and interesting sites, both for an experienced user, who looks on this list as a quick reference to the sites he needs, and to a newcomer to this world, showing him (or her) some of the things one can find (or one may do) in WWW. If you don't know where you're going, you may gulp a lot of salty water and get out disappointed. (More on that in my article Socrates and the Internet , in Hebrew). There are more than two hundred sites here and I didn't try to be comprehensive. I wanted to have a list which is big enough to include many attractive sites, yet small enough to be comprehended by the newcomer as a picture of the options WWW offers him.
If you like it, you may add it to your bookmarks (favorites, if you happen to use the Microsoft® Internet Explorer). If you like this list and you have a home page of your own, you may add this WWWlist to your list of recommended sites, so that other people may learn about it (and Google will put it higher in their list).

It is in English because Hebrew was not, at the time when this was written, one useful option but rather several different modes, acceptable in certain computers, which may come out as Siamese on other computers (many of which are not based in Siam). I do intend to have a Hebrew version of it, but not in the near future.

How to use this list

At the beginning of this list there are subject headings. Clicking one of these will bring you to a group of sites, home pages. Each site appears here with its name, which is also a link to this place. Clicking on that link, brings you to that site. Then come the URL addresses, beginning usually with “http://” and all the details of that address. Then there is a line (or two) with a short description of that site. A date like this 7 Aug 2005 at the end of a description, means that this item is rather new to this list, and was added to it on this date.
DISCLAIMER: I was only trying to help and I take no responsibility for the quality of these URLs, their availability (I did get to each one with the given URL address) or what will happen to you if you access them. I will not accept any complaints from wives, husbands, children or parents who became computer widows, etc.

The best-known search engine that gives good results by ordering pages by importance according to the number of pages connected to it and proximity of the words searched for, and displaying the results with the lines which contain these words. Google also keeps a cache, i.e. a copy of pages that are temporarily inaccessible.

A search engine for WWW sites. Classified and searchable. Includes many other services such as image (picture) serach, people search, product search, yellow pages, weather forecasts, maps, etc.
