Ariel Knafo
Education

Ariel Knafo (Education) received his B.A, M.A. and Ph.D. in Social Psychology at the Department of Psychology at the Hebrew University. His Ph.D. research was titled "Value Transmission in the Family: Processes and Contexts in the Perception and Acceptance of Parental Values by Adolescents". His current research focuses on family value transmission processes in relation to parent and adolescent behavioral characteristics. He is working under the guidance of Dr. Avi Assor.

Eitan Bar-Yosef
Foreign Literature and Linguistics

Eitan Bar-Yosef (Foreign Literature and Linguistics) completed his M.Phil. and D.Phil. at the University of Oxford. His doctoral thesis examined the representation of the Holy Land in English culture, 1798-1917. He is currently working on the construction of the "Jew" in late-Victorian culture. Prof. Mark Gelber is his advisor.

Yosef Jabarin
Geography

Yosef Jabarin (Geography) received his Ph.D. from the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Technion, Haifa. He also graduated from Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, Cambridge, M.A. and won academic awards from the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Technion, GSD at Harvard University, and the Science Ministry. His research will focus on cultural aspects of planning and development. Particularly, he will continue developing his approach to 'Culturally Sustainable Development of Housing'. The case study will be the unrecognized Arab settlements in the Negev. Prof. Oren Yiftachel is his advisor.

Moti Etun
Philosopy

Dr. Moti Etun received his B.A. (in philosophy and jewish thought) from
Hebrew University, and his M.A. (philosohy) from Tel Aviv University. He
wrote a Ph.D thesis, on "The Fear of philosophy and the Philosophy of Fear:
Nietsche's Psycological critic of the Kupernican Revolution according to
Kant and Schopenhauer", with Prof. Adi Parush and Dr. Ran Sigad as his advisors.

Shortly after finishing writing his thesis, on 15.7.99, Moti took his own life.

Tania Forte (Behavioral Sciences) received her B.A. in Liberal Arts from St. John's College (Annapolis, MD) and an MA and Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the University of Chicago. Rami Israel received his B.A. and M.A. at Ben-Gurion University, and is currently writing his Ph.D. thesis on "Confirmation Theories in the Philosophy of Science", with : Dr. Yitzhak Nevo, Dr. Dalia Deri and Professor Hilary Putnam (Harvard) as his advisors. His dissertation is a vindication of rationality as a reaction to post-modernism's attack on it. He recently spent a semester at Harvard as a Special student, auditing courses by the invitation of Prof. Putnam.

Michal Krumer-Nevo, (Social Work) has a B.A. in Hebrew Literature, and a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in Social Work from the Hebrew University. Ada Taggar-Cohen (Bible and the Ancient Near East) received her B.A. and M.A. from the Hebrew University. Her thesis deals with the Hittite priesthood in Anatolia of the second millenium B.C.E. in light of Hittite texts. It includes a comparative study of Mesopotamian and Biblical texts. Betty Wainberg received her B.A. from Tel-Aviv University. Her thesis deals with changes in quality of object relations and behavioral changes of institutionalized children. It studies the prospective, longitudinal relations between intrapsychic and behavioral changes in long-tern psychoanalytic residential treatment for children with severe personality disorders. Anat Navot
Jewish Thought

Anat Navot received her B.A. and M.A. from the Hebrew University; and a second M.A. from The Jewish Theological Seminary of America (Jerusalem).
Her thesis analyzes the attitude towards mumarim and heretics in the halacha from the Middle Ages to modern times while examining the basis of halachic discourse concerning the issue of modern secularism. The claim is made that discourse on this subject can contribute greatly to the re-thinking of relations between Orthodox and Secular Jews, an issue that is at the center of the Israeli public and academic agenda. Such an understanmay help point the way to new possibilities for co-existence in a multi-cultural society. Her advisor is Prof. Gerald J. Blidstein.

Ziad Safadi (Behavioral Science) received his B.A. and M.A. at Ben-Gurion University and is currently writing his Ph.D. thesis on "Attentional Inhibition and Facilitation in Schizophrenia", under the supervision of Prof. Avishai Henik and Prof. Ora Kaufman. Naama Atzaba-Poria (Behavioral Sciences) received her B.A. and M.A from the department of Behavioral Sciences at Ben-Gurion University and a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Surrey, UK. Her Ph.D. research was titled "Risk factors for problem behavior: A comparison between ethnic minority and majority children living in Britain". Her current research focuses on the links between early peer relationships and parent-child relationship with depressive symptoms and self-esteem in children at-risk for ADHD. James Nathan Ford received his M.A in Egyptology and Ph.D. in Ugaritic Philology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Ephraim Shoham-Steiner

History

Ephraim Shoham-Steiner received both his M.A and his Ph.D from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. His doctoral thesis, supervised by Prof. Avraham Grossman of the department of the History of the Jewish People, examined social attitudes toward marginal individuals in Jewish Medieval European Society. His current research focuses on texts of a medical-magical nature found on the margins of medieval European Hebrew rabbinic manuscripts and their social significance. Dr. Edward Fram is his advisor.

Her research interests include issues in the philosophy of mind and cognitive science, the philosophy of language, the philosophy of action and moral psychology.

Martin J. Wein
History

Martin J. Wein (History) received his M.A. at Emory University, Atlanta/Georgia. His thesis, under the supervision of Prof. Deborah Lipstadt, dealt with the Zionist movement in the First Czechoslovak Republic (1918-1938). His dissertation focuses on the minority conflict in interwar Czechoslovakia, with a special focus on the Jewish minority, and the conflict's implications for the State of Israel. He is working under the supervision of Dr. Guli Arad and Prof. Dan Diner (Hebrew University).

Yael Ben-zvi completed her Ph.D. at Stanford University. Her dissertation examined nineteenth-century constructions of the category "native" in literary and ethnographic U.S. texts. Deborah Tor received her B.A. and first M.A. from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and her A.M. and PhD from Harvard University. Her doctoral dissertation was titled "From Holy Warriors to Chivalric Order: The 'Ayyars in the Eastern Islamic World, AD 800-1055."
Her current research focuses on the transformation of the Jihad in the 8th and 9th centuries from a centrally-directed, governmentally controlled military campaign to one led by independent volunteer warriors, and the role this change played in the formation of the major institutions of classical Islamic civilization
