Structured Discussion and Communication Tools

The two archetypical ICT-supported communication modes, namely online chat and offline forum-discussion, and their derivations (SMS, chat using Voice/Video over IP, application sharing, etc.) provide an opportunity for two major learning experiences. The first of which would relate to the social and communal aspects of the communication experience and the second to its cognitive aspects. We aim at developing a set of tools for structuring common communication tools for educational purposes. A learning program tailored around an enhanced communication environment, would enable participants to use communication as a departure point for learning about communication in its two aspects, and thus become "empowered" users of communication tools. The usage experience will be supplemented by self and group monitoring processes, supported by tools for analysis of discussion parameters such as relevance and coherence, tools for moderating discussions in light of open-society principles, and template-based and semantic-web-based tools for rationally authoring contributions to a discussion. Initial design of prototypical enhanced forum and chat environment has been done during EDCOMNET FP5 project.
