Reviving the Historical Notion of Bildung in postmodern context

The University of Berlin was founded in 1809 by W. V. Humboldt along the line of his conception of higher education as aimed at endowing young students with an opportunity to undergo a genuine process of exploration leading to self-development (Bildung), through which each would discover his/her individual "calling", acquire understanding of the external circumstances within which he/she operates (Kultur) and reach self-fulfillment. The conception of education as Bildung (in its Humboldtian sense) may, to our view, be relevant as a potential remedy to what has been referred to by many as the "postmodern crisis of higher education". We are occupied with formulating a model for implementing the historical conception of Bildung into today's educational reality, and are interested in defining the adequate implementation context and scenarios for such endeavor.
