The workshop will feature two lecture series by Dr. Alexey Kondrashov, National Center for Biotechnology Information, NIH, Bethesda, MD, USA on

Sympatric Speciation and Evolution of Sex

as well as presentations by other participants.

Language

Sympatric Speciation (10 hours)

Theory: Maynard Smith's model, modifiers of mate choice, linearization at

the last stage of the process, hypergeometric phenotypic models, isolation

by natural selection, possible role of sexual selection; Data: host races,

African cichlids, genetics of differences between compatible species,

speciation-relevant QTLs.

Evolution of Sex (10 hours)

Theory: immediate benefits, patchy environments, variable selection in

deterministic and stochastic models, Muller's ratchet, mutational

deterministic model; Data: measuring parameters of spontaneous mutation,

selection in nature, ancient asexuals.
