ALEPH – GENERAL INFORMATION

The library catalogs are computerized using the ALEPH system. The Aranne Library catalog covers books, journals and other monographic materials and provides bibliographic details (e.g., place of publication, publisher, year of publication, edition) and holdings information (e.g., location, number of volumes and copies, and circulation status). Use the catalog to link to the online journals to which the Aranne library subscribes and to verify if materials located in database searches are held by the library.

Clicking on "Library Web Catalogs – BGU Libraries' Catalogs" opens a list of all our ALEPH catalogs. Select "Aranne Library" to perform a search limited to the Aranne Library collection. Select the "Ben-Gurion University Combined Catalog" to perform a simultaneous search in the Aranne Library collection and in all the specialized catalogs. (The Combined Catalog search does not include the Medical Library collection.) Click on the name of a specialized collection to perform a search that is limited to that collection alone.

To search for books owned by other Israeli university and research libraries use the Union List: Israel (ULI).  To search other Israeli libraries for journals use ULS, Union List of Serials (journals in all formats) and ULE, Union List of Electronic Journal Subscriptions.  For direct access from our homepage to the three union lists, click on "National Catalogs & Databases".  To request materials not owned by the Aranne Library, please contact the Interlibrary Loan librarians in the Circulation Department.  ILL forms are available on the library homepage.  Click on "Circulation & Forms".

To search Israeli academic library catalogs individually, click on "Library Web Catalogs – Israel Academic Library Network".  To search the catalogs of libraries outside Israel, click on "Library Web Catalogs – Libraries Abroad".

INSTRUCTION IN THE USE OF THE ALEPH CATALOG:

All new undergraduate students are required to take the library's online instruction course.  This course, which is a requirement for the Bachelors Degree, provides an introduction to the Aranne Library and detailed instruction in the use of the ALEPH catalog.  Graduate students and other library users can view the course as guests.  To access the course from the library homepage, click on קורס "הכרת הספריה".

Brief instructions for use of the ALEPH catalog can be found on the computer screen itself or on explanatory sheets prepared by the library.  The librarians at the reference desks provide assistance in the use of the catalog.
