The focus of the workshop was the processing of environmental information and execution of developmental decisions by plants. It tried to bridge the gulf among physiological, ecological and evolutionary approaches. Though the emphasis was on the level of the individual plant, the consequences of plasticity for the organization of populations and whole communities were also considered. It is hoped that the confrontation (in its original Latin sense) among scholars who are studying these phenomena at very different levels will generate new insights which will promote future interdisciplinary research of the subject.
